Abstract:

Widely scattered pottery, some lead glans and other metallic objects have been recovered in the vicinity of the Iberian settlement of Castellet de Banyoles, in an area covering some 3 hectares. Moreover, local collectors allowed us to examine thirty-four silver coins and two lead discs recovered from the same area. Most of them are silver and bronze Roman coins, minted during the Second Punic war, but there was also a drachma from Emporiae and two Iberian imitation drachmas, in addition to some bronze pieces from a later period. These findings suggest that a Roman military camp was established on this spot which could possibly be the one that destroyed the Ilercavonian settlement at the end of the Second Punic war or perhaps the beginning of the 2nd century B.C., during the first indigenous uprisings.
