Abstract:

This project is a collaboration among the IVCR of Valencia and the CJB of Naples. It has the aim of study the productive perfume activity in the tabernae of the North part of the degli Augustali street, next to the macellum and near the forum. The epigraphic and archaeological background about the perfumes of Pompeii has always been related to Ist century A. D. The findings of this campaign indicate very well that we must go back at the end of century II B. C. in order to find the first evident indications of the perfume elaboration. The appearance of several basins and a great amount of ceramic unguentaria, in addition to flowerpots, are the most important arguments to verify that in this zone, perfumes were made uninterruptedly from IInd century B. C. until the eruption of the 79. A big cellar was founded collapsed by the eruption. This cellar provided several bronze objects, in addition to panels of paintings, carbonized wood, fragments and pottery.
