Abstract:

This paper deals with the study of a high-quality Roman cameo engraved in a three-layered sardonyx with a representation of an enthroned Jupiter (6,2 × 4,8 cm). This glyptic piece is set on the Cruz de las Cofradías kept in the treasury of the cathedral of Girona. On the one hand, we provide a study of its primary context, proposing a low Empire chronology based on the stylistic and iconographic analysis. On the other hand, we present a hypothesis about its contextualization as ornamentum on the Gothic cross.
