Abstract:

The Castle of Falgars (Beuda) rises at the top of the highest eastern peak of the Serra del Mont, between the regions of Garrotxa and Alt Empordà. The preserved remains comprise a circular republican Roman watchtower with impressive opus siliceum surfaces and a rectangular medieval building attached to its southern side. Excavations carried out between 2010 and 2012 led to a better understanding of the various phases of occupation of the site, covering a period of more than fifteen centuries from the Middle Iberian Period (4th – 3rd century BC) to medieval times (10th -13th AD). They are generally short-term military occupations closely linked to instability and transition periods such as the Roman conquest, the crisis of the third century or the genesis of the Catalan counties.
