Abstract:

This paper analyses the Late Antique ceramic contexts of Septimania between the late fifth and early sixth centuries AD through a comparative study of the castrum of Collioure and the rural Roman settlement of Palol d’Avall (Elne). The study is developed through a classical ceramological analysis focused on the revision and chronological and typological recalibration of the Mediterranean imports previously proposed. This has made it possible to refine the horizons of formation and abandonment of several archaeological contexts. The assemblages studied reveal a remarkable chronological and typological homogeneity, dominated by African, Eastern and, to a lesser extent, Hispanic productions, thereby confirming the persistence of Mediterranean trade networks after the fall of the Western Roman Empire. The results highlight the economic continuity and regional integration of the territory during its incorporation into the Visigothic Kingdom of Toulouse, as well as the usefulness of ceramic studies for historical interpretation.
