Abstract:

In the surroundings of the Rovellat Square in Tarragona are important architectural remains dated to Late Antiquity. In different areas of this square and also at different times several excavations have developed with a great methodological disparity. These excavations have exposed several lateantique archaeological contexts related to successive phases of occupation of the area. Most of construction elements used in these late-antique buildings were produced expressly, but also a large volume of materials dating from earlier periods was also reused. These are mainly remains of architectural sculpture, but also inscriptions. All of them are made of marble and come mostly from the temple of Augustus, originally located near the cathedral. In this article we collect all of them, taking into account their finding circumstances. Our main objective is to determine the spatial concentration of the Early-Imperial materials in each of the Late-Antique architectural ensembles.
