Abstract:

A synthesis on the cult of Minerva in Tarraco through archaeological evidence is presented. Inscriptions are taken into account especially due to the amount of information they provide – the high number of epigraphic evidences relating to Minerva in this city is remarkable. However, sculptures and architectural documentation related to sanctuaries are also examined. It stands out above all the variety of social groups worshipping to this female divinity. Tarraco is the city of Hispania where comes from a greater number of testimonies related to the cult of Minerva, as a result of three main factors: the arrival of soldiers for the conquest of Hispania and their later settlement in the city for efforts related to the officium of the provincial Governor, the capitoline and public character of the goddess, and the splendor of the arts and crafts in the 2nd century AD.
