Abstract:

The Roman temple of Barcino has been an essential element in the colony plan. Its peculiar elongated and narrowplan and its location at the highest point of the ancient city have also conditioned the interpretations of the city’sforum. The temple plan proposed by A. Celles in 1835 has been employed by most researchers in the analysis ofBarcino’s urban layout since then. This paper intends to propose an alternative plan of the temple based on datadrawn from two recent archaeological excavations. Topographic analysis, typological comparisons, and thearchaeological data obtained from the temple surroundings will also be employed when examining not onlythe plausibility of this proposal but also how it affects the colony’s layout.Barcino, temple, urban layout, forumLe temple romain de Barcino est un des éléments essentiales du plan urbain de la colonie. La forme du temple,allongé et étroit, et son emplacement à l’endroit le plus élevé de l’ancienne ville ont conditionné les interprétationsdu forum dans l’enceinte de la ville. Le plan du temple qui fut proposé par A. Celles en 1835 a été employé depuislors par la majorité des chercheurs qui ont analysé la distribution urbaine de Barcino. Cet article essaie de proposerun plan alternatif d’après les données issues des nouvelles fouilles archéologiques. Les analyses topographiques,les comparaisons typologiques et les données obtenues dans les environs du temple seront utiles pour déterminernon seulement l’orientation du temple avec exactitude mais aussi la possible réinterprétation de la planimétrieurbaine.
