Abstract:

Iulia Libica was a small town in the middle of the Pyrenees that showed apparently no signs of urbanism. The town consists of an agglomeration of houses with a spectacular forum in the middle. It is believed that it was founded as a border town along the Ceretan route between Ruscino (Perpignan) and Ilerda (Lleida), which acted as statio for collecting the portorium (quinquagessima hispana – 2% value of goods in the interprovincial trade). Iulia Libica was the first Hispanic town coming from the Narbonensis Gaul along the Ceretan route after crossing a possible bridge over the river Segre. Since 2013, the ICAC in collaboration with a UAB team is excavating the forum of Iulia Libica and other Roman structures found in the modern town of Llívia.
