Abstract:

The protohistoric settlement of La Gessera, located in south-western Catalonia, took part of the archaeological work carried out by the Institut d’Estudis Catalans, under the management of P. Bosch Gimpera, in 1914. Once the dig was finished, the extracted artifacts from the site where taken to the Archeological Musueum of Catalonia (MAC). After being forgotten for six decades, some scientific studies between 1975 and 2002 established new theories about its functionality and chronology, which was fixed between the second half of the 6th century BC and the 1st century AC. Recently, in 2014, the GRESEPIA research group made a new intervention on the site, in which the archaeological stratigraphy were exhausted, as well as a review of Bosch-Gimpera’s historical documentation. From the conduction of this research, we can conclude that the settlement’s occupational periods differ greatly from what was suggested since the 1970s and its chronological time frame should be placed between the end of the 7th century BC and the second half of the 5th century BC.
