Abstract:

The aim of this paper is to study the white marble of Luna (marmor Lunense), as one of the ornamental stone materials most widely used at Classical Antiquity and, in particular, in Roman times. A summary of their diffusion and uses is presented with a special attention to Roman Hispania. The focus is on the city of Tarraco, capital of the provincia Hispania Citerior, because it concentrates most of findings of this marble, due to its location. In this city it was used for all kinds of objects, unlike other Roman towns of the Iberian Peninsula.
