Abstract:

The present article summarises the results of recent investigations on the Late Roman Empire wall of Barcino. Firstly, through a great deal of archaeological material from excavations undertaken in the last sixty years, we propose a chronology for the construction of the walled enclosure in the last third of the 3rd century. Secondly, we detail some new aspects of the monument related to the state of conservation of the Augustan wall at the time of the Late Roman Empire reform, which involved a restoration using the opus africanum technique, as well as the most distinctive element of the new work, represented by its numerous towers. Finally, we suggest a preliminary contextualisation of the new data within a wider interpretative framework.
