Abstract:

The latest excavations of the Roman town of Iesso have focused on an underexplored area of the city: the northern suburban district. Until now, only one single building is identified in this suburban area next to the tower flanking the northern city gate of which we only documented its southernmost half. The building comprises a set of 5 rooms, preceded by a portico, and a large backyard, which also extends along the western side of the complex. The backyard is equipped with a water well, excavated in 2017. This paper aims to present the new archaeological data of this suburban construction and to present the exceptional archaeological assemblage recovered inside the well to, finally, offer the first interpretations regarding its use and functionality.
