Abstract:

The Archbishop of Toledo’s elevation to Primate in the year 1088 saw the emergence in the Iberian Peninsula of a suprametropolitan authority with powers unprecedented in the history of the Hispanic church. This new hierarchical model clashed with certain ecclesial and ecclesiological pa radigms, which conceived the ecclesiastical province and its metropoli tan as the highest jurisdictional division of the Western Church beneath the Holy See. The purpose of this article is to produce a chronology, revision and analysis of the different conflicts that were brought about by the exercise of the Primacy of the Spains in Tarraconense’s Province. The study carried out leads us to propose two new lines of interpretation which allow us to provide new reflections the traditional historiographical hypotheses as to the nature of relations between the medieval episcopate of Tarragona and the Primacy of the Spains.
