Abstract:

The problem of the origin of Baelo Claudia has been widely discussed by historians, being recently confirmed that the ancient Bailo had its original location in La Silla del Papa. This settlement coexisted in the middle of the 2nd century BC with a little site dedicated to the exploitation of sea resources and located in the Bolonia inlet, where the Hispanic-Roman city would be developed in augustean times. Did the Silla del Papa oppidum control the coastal settlement? We present a comparative study between both settlements that allows us to go into detail about its economic relationships, from the advance in the knowledge of its republican population and new information that we have obtained after the quantitative analysis of their respective amphoric groups.
