Abstract:

In this article, we present the results of recent excavations that have made it possible to document new stretches of road. These lengths of road lie in the areas immediately outside the walls on the west side of Barcino. In other words, they are the access routes to the north gate of the ‘decumanus’ (northwest to south-east thoroughfare) and the south gate of the ‘cardo’ (south-west to north-east thoroughfare) of Barcino. We reach the conclusion, based on the archaeological remains located, that there were three different roads. By analysing the engineering works and the characteristics of the construction of each of these stretches, we attempt to determine the types of ‘viae’ that existed in this sector of the ‘suburbium’ closest to the city. In addition, we can see that this network of roads was from its origins in the 1st century BC a feature of the ‘ager’ of the colony and that, as a consequence, it was under the influence of a ‘centuriato’.
