Abstract:

Most of imperial portraits from Tarragona have been taken into account by different researchers in recent years, but always separately. However, a number of them have not been considered recently in the bibliography. These reasons make necessary an overall assessment related to the update of this large set of portraits. This work provides a first assemblage. It also offers a review on production workshops of the imperial portraits, that have been analyzed in the framework of the general sculptural production of Tarraco. In addition, special attention has been paid to various peculiarities which make it possible to discover certain elaboration techniques. These considerations have allowed to relate specific technical aspects with concrete periods. These reflections will allow to deepen in aspects like the original place of exposure and to limit chronologies of the portraits.
