Abstract:

This work addresses the outcomes of our present research from an interdisciplinary perspective. Our study focuses on the collection and analysis of a variety of archaeological materials that depict scenes of choral performance (dance, procession, and music). The materials examined, specifically decorated columns, were integral to the intricate iconographic discourse of constructions designed in the public spaces of the poleis and their surrounding areas, including sanctuaries, squares, and roads. The chronology of the studied cases ranges from the Archaic to the Classical period, and they are geographically distributed throughout the Greek sphere. The aim of this study is to illustrate and convey the process by which the chorus, through ritualized movement and the orchestration of myth, helped to define these spaces and structured and accompanied the social and religious development of the community.
