Abstract:

In the Roman city of Aeso, a significant number of Latin epigraphs has been documented, among them, an exceptional series of 30 pedestals for honorary and funerary statues, of which 22 have been preserved. A review of the module, shape, palaeography and ordinatio of the series of honorary pedestals of Aeso has been carried out. This has led to the identification of two different production series, one of which follows the patterns established by the Tarraco workshops, while the second reflects the continuation of the means applied to this type of monument. The petrographic analysis helped differentiate between the two types of pedestals, even though the material of the supports is, in both cases, a cretaceous limestone. Through the macroscopic analysis, we have been able to identify three different types of limestone, use of which fits with the two typological series defined.
