The aim of this research is to analyse the relationship between landscape dynamics and land-use in the littoral plain of the Empordà from a long term perspective. Paleoenvironmental data were crossed with archaeological, historical and morphological data. A sedimentary record of the ancient Castelló lagoon, located in the northern area of the coastal plain, has been studied. GIS allowed the correlation of paleoecological, archaeological and historical data in a multi-scale and diachronic framework. In this context, the Roman conquest (2nd-1st century B.C.) is in correlation with a process of landscape change : intensive farming settlement, presence of centuriated grids around the Roman town of Emporiae, and the configuration of a more diversified cropping system in, what was a rather wooded landscape.
