The evolution of wine-growing areas in northeastern Catalonia (2nd century BC - 5th century AD): Analysis through the dolia and the cellae uinariae
Abstract:
This article analyses the evolution of storage spaces in rural settlements in the north-east of what is now Catalonia, between the 2nd century BC and the 5th century AD, with an emphasis on the role of cellae and dolia as indicators of the evolution of viticulture and the rural world in Roman times. The aim is to examine, based on excavated sites, the establishment, use and eventual disappearance of containers and cellars, as well as their subsequent replacement with other types of containers. Through this study, the aim is to identify the characteristics of these spaces, estimate their storage capacity and determine the type of product preserved in the dolia. In short, the article claims the value of the dolia as a source for the study of rural territory in Roman times.
